Wednesday (19th October 2016) night saw the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards 2016/17 ceremony take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury, Bristol, where Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park were awarded Bronze for Large Visitor Attraction of the year, making it the best Large Farm attraction in the area.
Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park is the brainchild of John Douglas, who wanted to introduce wildlife and nature to the city dwellers of Bristol, Bath and surrounding areas. In 2014, during the Park’s 25th year, John’s son Doug returned from the Army alongside his wife Hannah and young daughter Honor to take over management of the Park. Since, Doug has introduced major new award-winning events to the area including; FEAR at Avon Valley and the Christmas Experience, as well as a whole host of daytime activities and opportunities for those visiting the Park, these include; an animal handling and interaction barn, new play equipment including bouldering wall and air cannon arena, and many more activities for the whole family to join in.
Judging took place in August, with the Tourism award judges making numerous interactions via social media, through the company website, and making a visit to the Park too. The finalists were then chosen based on the interactions they had made. On the night, the judges at the Bristol, Bath and Somerset awards labelled Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park as [a] “Great attraction with exceptional customer service” and awarding them Bronze in the Best Large Attraction category.
Doug Douglas said of the award “I’m so incredibly proud of my team, to win the Large Attraction award alongside such well-known attractions such as Tyntesfield, National Trust and The Roman Baths is a massive achievement for our family-run business.” Keen to encourage families to the Park, to make memories and enjoy family-time, Doug added; “I hope those who visit the Park enjoy making as many memories here as I had as a child, and my daughter is making now.”
The Tourism Awards began to recognise the diversity of the region’s tourism industry and helps raise the profiles of the area, as well as a selection its top tourism providers. All winners from the local awards will be entered into the South West Excellence Awards, giving Avon Valley another opportunity to show how popular they are.
